- The Internet can be a place of deception and criminal activity if all users are not careful. Students who use blogs MUST protect their identity by keeping personal information out of their posts and not sharing their user names and passwords with anyone besides their teachers and parents.
- It's important to explicitly teach students the rules, requirements, and use for classroom blogging. They need to know the difference between appropriate posting verses inappropriate posting. Students also need to be aware that whatever they post on the web can stay with them throughout their lifetime.
- Students need to learn how to deal with inappropriate comments, Internet sites, and advertisements in a proper manner.
- Teachers must maintain communication between their administrators, departments, and parents about their classroom blogging site.
- Teachers must regularly check student's postings/comments, making sure that they stay educational and are school-appropriate.
- Teachers should check student work before it is posted on the world-wide web.

I absolutely agree about the fact that anything these students post with their blogs, or even their social networking sites, can and will stay with them throughout their lifetime. My principal was just having a talk at an assembly with new students the other day about the simple act of taking pictures with cell phones or posting pictures on the web. Now, job employers can check you out before they even interview you and some of these decisions kids think might be funny at the time can actually come back to bite them! It's funny how people never really had to think about this kind of stuff before but now it's necessary to do so.
ReplyDeleteI agree that maintaining control and supervision over a class blog is vital to its success. Many student will get very excited about the opportunity to express themselves through the internet, but its important to teach the difference between "school" blogging and personal blogging. My hope would be that when we teach students these differences, they might actually apply their new found knowledge about safety and appropriateness to the sites or blog in which they already participate. While a small risk, many people are not aware of how personal information might be gathered, used or damaged if care is not taken.
